What courses usually look for
Every course and provider sets its own entry requirements. Here are the things that are most often considered, so you know what to think about before we talk.
Previous qualifications
School certificates, college or university qualifications, A levels, BTECs or an Access to HE Diploma. Qualifications from Ukraine or other countries can often be considered. Sometimes a statement of comparability from UK ENIC is requested.
English language
Many courses ask for evidence of your English level. This might be a recognised test, a previous qualification taught in English, or the provider's own assessment. The level needed depends on the course.
Age and experience
Mature applicants are welcome on many courses. Work or life experience may be taken into account, especially if you don't have recent qualifications.
Residency and eligibility
Where you live and your immigration status can affect which application routes, fee rates and funding you may be eligible for. This is checked separately by the provider and by Student Finance. People who may be eligible include British citizens and people with settled status, pre-settled status, refugee status or a Homes for Ukraine visa.
Different ways in
Foundation year
An extra first year that prepares you for degree-level study. It can suit people returning to education or without the usual entry qualifications.
Degree from year one
The standard route for applicants who meet the course's entry requirements.
Top-up degree
For people who already hold a relevant qualification, such as an HND or Foundation Degree, and want to complete a full bachelor's degree.
I can help you understand the requirements for the specific courses you're interested in. Final decisions about entry are always made by the university or college. Ask me about a course.
Documents you may be asked for
Not every course needs everything on this list. Tick off what you already have, and we can go through the rest together.
Your ticks are saved only in this browser on this device.
Please don't send me copies of personal documents until we've talked about what's needed. I'll tell you exactly what each application requires.
Preparing for an admissions assessment
Some courses ask applicants to complete a short assessment or interview. Many don't. If yours does, I'll help you understand what to expect and how to prepare.
English assessment
A check of reading, writing, listening or speaking, often used when you don't have a recognised English qualification.
Written task
A short piece of writing on a given topic, to show how you organise your ideas and express yourself.
Maths or numeracy
Some business, finance or computing courses may check basic numeracy.
Interview
A conversation, online or in person, about your interest in the course and your plans.
How I can help you prepare
- Explain the format of the assessment you've been invited to
- Go through practice questions and example topics
- Help you plan answers about why you chose the course
- Check what you need to bring or set up beforehand
Simple tips
- Read the invitation carefully and note the date, time and format

- Have your ID ready if it's requested
- It's fine to take a moment to think before answering
Fit study around work and family
University isn't only for school leavers. Many courses are designed for adults who work, look after children or are new to the UK education system.
Full-time
The most common mode. Teaching time varies by course and provider.
Part-time
Fewer hours per week over a longer period, leaving more time for work or family.
Blended learning
A mix of on-campus classes and online study.
Evening or weekend teaching
Some providers schedule classes outside usual working hours.
Foundation year
A preparatory first year to build confidence and study skills.
Top-up degree
A shorter route to a full bachelor's degree if you already hold a relevant qualification.
Study modes and timetables differ between courses and can change. Tell me about your situation and I'll help you look for options that might suit you. Message me.
Understanding Student Finance
Many students in the UK pay for their course and living costs with government-backed loans. Here's a plain-language overview of how it works.
Tuition Fee Loan
Covers your course fees and is paid directly to the university or college, not to you.
Maintenance Loan
Helps with living costs such as rent and food. The amount can depend on household income and where you live while studying.
Repayment
You usually start repaying only once you finish and earn above a set threshold. Repayments are linked to income.
Who may be eligible
Eligibility depends on things like your residency and immigration status, how long you've lived in the UK, previous study and the course itself. People who may be eligible include British citizens and people with settled status, pre-settled status, refugee status or a Homes for Ukraine visa. Always check the official rules.
How I can help
- Explain the process in simple language
- Show you how the online application works
- Help you understand which documents you'll need
- Point you to the right official information
